Janelle Monae hopes people watch Glass Onion more than once

Janelle Monae is the star of the show in Rian Johnson‘s new whodunit, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, as the mysterious, intriguing and surprising Andi.

During the film’s press conference at the London Film Festival in October, Janelle told reporters that she hopes people will watch Glass Onion at least twice to appreciate all the clues that were dropped about her character throughout the film.

It was just working with Rian, getting into the nuances of like, ‘Oooh, what if we leave some Easter eggs behind?’ We hope that people will watch this film twice so when they see it the second time they can look back and be like, ‘(Gasp) It was already there!’ We’ve left clues here, left clues there.

Monae added that she loved collaborating with Johnson, who also wrote the screenplay, to create “little details” that viewers will notice about Andi when they watch the film again knowing her full story.

“He’s a true collaborator and that’s what you want… Obviously, I loved the script, I was blown away by the twist, but when it came to character development, I had so much fun working with Rian on just those little details that hopefully, you guys will find when you watch it five, six, seven times!”

Monae stars alongside Daniel Craig as his returning Southern detective Benoit Blanc as well as newcomers Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Leslie Odom Jr., Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Madelyn Cline and Jessica Henwick. In this film, Norton’s tech billionaire character Miles invites them to his private island in Greece for a murder-mystery party, which inevitably goes awry.

I don’t love the Knives Out films quite as much as most but this is a lot more fun than the first one. You can read my full (and spoiler-free) review of the movie here.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is on Netflix from Friday 23rd December
