May movie: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Marvel/Disney

Top films for May

A new month has arrived so it’s time to look ahead at what’s coming up in cinemas or on streaming. Here are the biggest and best movies coming out in May.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

While I’ve had MCU fatigue lately, I have faith that James Gunn is going to stick the landing and bring us an amazing final chapter in the Guardians trilogy. Get ready for one more outing with Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Drax, Mantis, Nebula and Gamora! I’ve seen amazing first reactions to this so I have high hopes. In cinemas from 3rd May.

The Little Mermaid

I have to be honest, I’m not that excited about this live-action remake but I’m still curious to see how Rob Marshall has pulled it off. Halle Bailey stars as Ariel, a mermaid who makes a deal to trade her voice for human legs so she can experience life above water. Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem and Jonah Hauer-King also star. In cinemas from 26th May.

Hypnotic

Ben Affleck has been busy lately! We’ve just seen him in AIR, and now he’s starring in Robert Rodriguez’s new mystery thriller. He plays a detective who investigates a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program. In cinemas from 26th May.

May movie: Fast X
Universal

Fast X

It’s time to see how many ridiculous, gravity-defying stunts are packed into this movie! The Fast franchise has become very silly but you can’t deny that they’re entertaining. The core gang of Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese and Nathalie Emmanuel are back for the penultimate instalment, which sees them going up against Jason Momoa‘s villain. In cinemas from 19th May.

Beau Is Afraid

Ari Aster‘s movie isn’t going to please the masses because it’s weird, self-indulgent and three hours long. But I liked it more than I expected and don’t want to completely put people off it. Joaquin Phoenix stars as the paranoid Beau, who goes on a surreal, anxiety-ridden journey following the death of his mother. You will be thinking about this movie for days after! In cinemas from 19th May.

Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret

Based on the beloved novel by Judy Blume, this coming-of-age tale follows Margaret (Abby Ryder Forston) as she makes new friends and deals with the struggles of puberty after her family moves from the city to the suburbs. Rachel McAdams, one of my faves, plays her mum! In cinemas from 19th May.

Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie

This documentary explores Michael J. Fox‘s personal and private ups and downs, with a particular focus on his battle with Parkinson’s disease. I think this is going to be an emotional watch! On Apple TV+ from 12th May.

The best of the rest: Love Again, Book Club: The Next Chapter, The Mother, The Eight Mountains, White Men Can’t Jump, Sisu, To Catch a Killer, and Master Gardener.
