Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg in You

You: Please let season four be the last

Season four of You has come to an end, and given the popularity of the Netflix show, a fifth season is looking very likely (UPDATE: It has now been confirmed). I would be absolutely fine if the show ended here because I think Joe Goldberg’s BS has gone on long enough.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

I was excited by the first season of You, starring Penn Badgley, because I really enjoyed Caroline Kepnes‘ book of the same name. It was pretty trashy and easily binge-able and established the audience’s weird connection to Joe, a psychopathic serial killer and stalker we don’t hate for some odd reason. I didn’t read the rest of the books but I obviously carried on watching seasons two and three, which were successful thanks to Victoria Pedretti as the twisted Love Quinn. It got more trashy but I still found myself flying through it.

Season four is the first time I really felt like You had run out of ideas. Moving the action to London, the first half seemed more like a murder mystery, with the “eat the rich killer” popping off the awful rich people who frequent Sundry House. It was refreshing that the control had been flipped on its head and Joe was no longer pulling the strings… BUT WAIT.

Midway through part two there is a huge twist that reveals that Joe has been the eat the rich killer all along and Rhys Montrose (Ed Speelers), who we thought was the murderer, is a figment of his imagination. He’s slowly losing his mind and has totally forgotten that he captured Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) and put her in a cage, so she’s starving to death. He then figured out a way to pin all the deaths on Lady Phoebe’s stalker, get away with killing Kate’s dad Tom (Greg Kinnear) and start afresh with Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) in New York.

I’m fed up with how he keeps getting away with it. In previous seasons, it didn’t bother me so much, but now I’m over his BS and ready for him to be caught. It’s gone on long enough! It made me so mad when he caught Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) before she could take her evidence to the police. How has he managed to cleanly pull off all of these crimes?! The show has never been particularly realistic and believable but there is no way he didn’t mess up somewhere.

The show has now come back full circle to New York, where it seems like Joe has a great new life with Kate, who seemingly knows all about his dark past. Seeing Rhys as his reflection at the very end indicates that he’s still got that evil side within him. But, other than that little tease, there isn’t much left to wrap up so it would be the case of creating a new story for the sake of continuing a popular show. There is no cliffhanger, so I’d be happy for it to end here. But, if a fifth season does happen (and it will), that one should be the last. It can’t keep going forever!

UPDATE: A fifth season of You has been officially confirmed and it will be the last. WOOHOO!
