The Weekend Away: Film Review

I love Leighton Meester and will watch my beloved Blair Waldorf in anything – and considering I haven’t seen a new movie of hers for years, I simply had to check out The Weekend Away.

In this crime thriller/mystery, Meester plays Beth, who goes to Croatia to spend the weekend with her best friend Kate (Christina Wolfe) and let her hair down for the first time since becoming a mum. Unfortunately, the fun is short-lived – as Beth wakes up after a big girls’ night out with no memory and Kate is missing.

This film is trashy and ridiculous and it feels more like an episode of a crime procedural than a Netflix movie. Some of the plot twists are predictable, some character decisions are absolutely illogical and silly, and it feels quite wild and chaotic. Yet despite all that, I had a fun time with it!

Even though I can acknowledge that the film isn’t of the highest quality, I can’t lie – I enjoyed it. The movie whips along at a brisk pace (it’s only 89 minutes), the sunny location is gorgeous, and there are plenty of twists to keep you interested and make you rethink your whodunnit predictions. I felt entertained watching the mystery unfold and gradually finding out what happened that night.

I loved seeing Meester back on my screen and she does well as the stressed and frustrated friend who cannot get the police to take her seriously. The only person she has to rely on is her caring and supportive taxi driver Zain (Zaid Bakri), who is nice and selfless and therefore he must be a suspect! Everyone’s a suspect tbh.

So no, The Weekend Away is not good – it’s pretty throwaway stuff – but I didn’t mind it at all and have no regrets about watching this silly mystery!
