Top films for October
It’s the start of a new month so it’s time for my monthly movie preview once again.
I thought the big blockbusters might be back on the cards following the release of Tenet but sadly there is a big hole in the calendar until the release of No Time to Die next month (fingers crossed). Anyway, there are still some potential gems to see at home and at the cinema – here’s what I’m looking forward to:
As a bit of a horror wuss, I was quite nervous about going to see Saint Maud but the rave reviews convinced me to suck it up. It lulls you into a false sense of security, thinking “this isn’t too bad actually”, and then the finale hits you BAM in the face! What an astounding performance from Morfydd Clark, who plays a newly devout private nurse who becomes obsessed with saving her dying patient’s soul. Unsettling stuff. In cinemas from 9th October.
Kajillionaire
Miranda July‘s latest film is quirky, indie and won’t be everyone’s cup of tea – but it tells a unique and interesting story. Evan Rachel Wood stars as Old Dolio, the daughter of two scam artists who have treated her like their accomplice rather than their child since she was born. She finally breaks free to follow her own path with the help of outsider Melanie (Gina Rodriguez). In cinemas from 9th October.
Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, this legal drama is ridiculously star-studded – think Eddie Redmayne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sacha Baron Cohen, and many more – and such a gripping watch. As the title suggests, it depicts the seriously dodgy trial held in an effort to convict organisers of an anti-Vietnam War protest outside the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968 of conspiracy to incite violence. Unbelievable stuff goes down! In selected cinemas now and on Netflix from 16th October.
Over the Moon
Now it’s time for one for the kids! This animated adventure musical looks and sounds great and I for one am here for it. Featuring a voice cast which includes Sandra Oh, John Cho, and Ken Jeong, this film tells the story of a girl named Fei Fei who flies a rocket ship to meet the moon goddess Chang’e. On Netflix from 23rd October.
Rebecca
Ben Wheatley‘s remake of Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel Rebecca seems to be taking a beating on Twitter but I quite like the look of it, perhaps because I haven’t seen previous adaptations. Lily James stars as the second Mrs. De Winter, who finds herself battling the shadow of her husband Maxim (Armie Hammer)’s dead first wife Rebecca. I like Wheatley’s work so I’m looking forward to it. In cinemas and on Netflix from 21st October.
Relic
Another one for your horror fans – Relic stars Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote as a mother and daughter who are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family home. I haven’t seen it yet so I can’t give you my horror wuss verdict, but I’m nervous already! In cinemas from 30th October.
