Top films for September
It’s baaaaack! For the first time since March, there seem to be enough movie releases to bring back my monthly movie preview.
I’m giving it a little bit of an overhaul though and putting less focus on cinema releases and incorporating more of a mix between theatrical and streaming service releases.
So, without further ado, here are the films I’m most looking forward to seeing/excited about everybody else seeing this September.
Mulan
I was outraged when it was announced that the live-action remake of Disney’s 1998 animation Mulan was going to Disney+ instead of in cinemas and I was even more annoyed after I witnessed its beauty recently. It’s basically a PG-friendly war movie and I dug it. Available on Disney+ for a premium (and I mean premium) rental fee from 4th September. Check out my review.
I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Charlie Kaufman‘s latest has already won rave reviews from the critics so I’m excited to check it out on Netflix. The fantastic Jessie Buckley plays Cindy, who visits her new boyfriend’s family farm and gets trapped there by a snowstorm and she begins to question the nature of everything she knew. The psychological horror has a top supporting cast too, with Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette, and David Thewlis all coming along for the ride. Released on Netflix on 4th September.
The New Mutants
This cursed movie has been delayed so many times I actually feel sorry for everybody involved But it’s finally, finally here! I’ve seen mixed reviews from its early previews but I want to judge it for myself. This horror movie, a spin-off of the X-Men franchise, follows mutants – played by Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Heaton – who are held in a secret facility and fighting to save themselves. The Devil All The Time
Netflix is pulling out the big guns this month, with amazing original films every week during September. Next up is this psychological thriller. I’m gonna be honest, I had no clue about what it’s about until I just looked it up but I was sold on the star-studded cast, which includes (*drum roll*) Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, Jason Clarke, Riley Keough, Eliza Scanlen, and Mia Wasikowska. If you need a bit more than that, here’s the plot – Sinister characters converge around a young man devoted to protecting those he loves in a postwar backwoods town teeming with corruption and brutality. Streaming on Netflix from 16th September.
Enola Holmes
And continuing with the Netflix theme, we have up next: Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock Holmes’ teenage sister, who embarks on a quest to find her missing mother. This looks like a fun ride and that’s not at all – Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, and Helena Bonham Carter are also in it. What’s not to love? Streaming on Netflix from 23rd September.
The Boys in the Band
I wish I didn’t have so many Netflix films on here but the truth is that they’re on a roll in September and there are some gaping holes in the cinema release calendar due to Covid (although they are some indies you could check out!) And I couldn’t resist putting The Boys in the Band on here when it has such an amazing cast – Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto, and Andrew Rannells. In this adaptation of the stage play, a group of gay friends reunites to celebrate a birthday and the evening is thrown into turmoil when the host’s potentially closeted roommate turns up uninvited. Excited about this one too! Streaming on Netflix from 30 September.
Honourable mentions also go to Bill & Ted Face the Music (never seen the previous two so not excited), Cuties (an uplifting Netflix movie), British drama Rocks, and US romcom The Broken Hearts Gallery.
