August pick, Nope.
Universal

Top films for August

It’s the start of August which can only mean one thing – it’s time for my monthly movie preview! Here’s my personal selection of the biggest and best films coming up over the next few weeks.

Nope

After the impressive Get Out and Us, I’ve got high hopes for Jordan Peele‘s latest horror. This one stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as Hollywood horse trainers. I have been actively avoiding details about this film (which is hard since it came out in America weeks ago) so all I know is it’s a UFO sci-fi horror. I can’t wait to find out more. In cinemas from 12th August. My review.

Bullet Train

I am hyped for this one! Its blend of action and comedy feels right up my street and it stars Brad Pitt so that’s another big tick. The film, directed by Atomic Blonde’s David Leitch, features five assassins onboard a fast-moving bullet train between two Japanese cities. Of course, they eventually realise their missions are related. This also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry and Joey King. I really hope this one doesn’t let me down. In cinemas from Wednesday 3rd August. My review.

Luck

Now, here’s a more family-friendly option. This animated fantasy tells the story of Sam, the unluckiest person in the world, who finds herself in the Land of Luck and must work with magical creatures to rewrite her fate. I have a feeling this will be super cute and wholesome. On Apple TV+ from Friday 5th August. My review.

August pick, Prey.
Disney+

Prey

Breathing new life into the Predator franchise, Prey is a prequel not to be underestimated. It is set within the Comanche Nation in 1719 and follows a warrior named Naru (Amber Midthunder) as she goes up against a new and highly evolved alien that has arrived in her tribe’s territory. It feels fresh and exciting and the fight sequences are ace. Review coming later this week. On Disney+ from Friday 5th August. My review.

Mr. Malcolm’s List

This romantic comedy looks like it sends up the usual period drama tropes. Zawe Ashton stars as a wealthy young lady who engages in a courtship with the mysterious Mr. Malcolm, played by Sope Dirisu. I really enjoyed the tone of the trailer so I think this will be good fun. In cinemas from Friday 26th August. My review.

Beast

Now, this could be absolutely terrible but am I going to miss this man v lion film? Never! Idris Elba plays a widower who returns to South Africa with his daughters and encounters a ferocious lion on a game reserve. Cinema! Released on Friday 26th August. My review.
