Top films for June
Once again, it’s the start of a new month so it’s time to look ahead and see what June holds in the world of film. Here’s a rundown of the most exciting releases coming out over the next four weeks.
Men
Ex Machina filmmaker Alex Garland brings us a new folk horror starring the excellent Jessie Buckley. She plays a recently widowed woman who goes on a holiday to the English countryside and is terrorised by the local men (all played by Rory Kinnear). It looks very weird and appears to have divided critics so I’m keen to check it out and see where I land. In cinemas 1st June.
Jurassic World Dominion
This is a no-brainer! Jurassic Park is my favourite film of all time so I’m so so excited to see Laura Dern, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum reunited onscreen once again. Judging by the trailer, this film gets very silly and ridiculous so I just hope that it’s not complete nonsense. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are also back for more dino action. Lightyear
To infinity and beyond! This Toy Story spin-off tells the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy. Voiced by Chris Evans, the sci-fi animation follows the Space Ranger after he and his crew are marooned on a hostile planet. In cinemas 17th June. Here’s my review.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande
I’ve seen this one already and I really liked it (review on its way soon). Emma Thompson plays a retired schoolteacher and widow who hires a sex worker named Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) for a night of passion. There is a lot more to this than the synopsis suggests and the screenplay is terrific. It’s just two actors in a hotel room and I was totally absorbed. In cinemas 17th June. Here’s my review.
Elvis
Austin Butler puts on his Blue Suede Shoes and does his best hip-shaking to play Elvis Presley in Baz Lurhmann‘s stylish biopic. This received mixed reviews at Cannes but I still want to see it as it also stars my fave Tom Hanks (although his accent has received some criticism). Looks like another film which divides opinion! In cinemas 24th June. Here’s my review.
The Black Phone
We’ve already seen Ethan Hawke play a baddie in Moon Knight and he goes much further as a kidnapper and serial killer in Scott Derrickson‘s horror. The film follows his latest prisoner Finney, who hears the voices of the previous victims and they try to help him escape. This looks quite spooky! In cinemas 22nd June. My review.
