Give Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney an Emmy right now
Everyone is talking about Sydney Sweeney and her performance in this season of Euphoria and rightly so – she is amazing – and I think she should not be forgotten by the time the Emmys roll around in September.
*SPOILER ALERT*
Her character, Cassie Howard, starts off the new season insisting that she’s going to be single for a while so she can learn to love herself – but then she falls back into her old patterns. And to make matters worse, she has fallen for Nate (Jacob Elordi), who is still involved with her best friend Maddy (Alexa Demie), although they’re not officially back together.
Cassie is quite a tragic character; she pins all of her self-worth on someone who is playing mind games with her. Nate tells her he loves her and wants to be with her but then does boyfriend-type things for Maddy. Cassie is an emotional wreck at the moment – she constantly feels guilty for what she’s doing to Maddy, upset by how Nate treats her, flaunts her body to get his attention and is straight-up embarrassing at times.
She consistently looks like a wounded puppy and is quite often a snotty, crying mess (the above GIF is the perfect example!) Sweeney must feel exhausted playing a character who feels so deeply and easily. And for that reason, I think she deserves the supporting actress Emmy! I know the Emmys aren’t until September so I hope she doesn’t get forgotten by then – her work so far in this season is incredible. That GIF better be used for her nominee reel!
Don’t get me wrong though, the acting so far in this year’s Euphoria has been impressive all around. I think Zendaya is terrific as drug addict Rue – but she’s won the Emmy for that already! – and Eric Dane is doing astounding work as Nate’s messed-up dad Cal (his breakdown this week was quite something).
Consider this the start of my Sydney Sweeney for an Emmy campaign!
