Top films for April
April has arrived folks so that means it’s time to check out the movies that are coming our way this month.
AIR
This sports drama tells the story of Nike brokering its legendary partnership with Michael Jordan when he was only a rookie. It sounds like a dull story about a shoe but it’s way more interesting and engaging than that. The script is witty and Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman and Viola Davis are all on their A-game. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 5th April
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
As a fan of the Nintendo video games (Luigi is my guy), I’m excited to see these beloved characters on the big screen. The story follows plumber Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) as he tries to stop Bowser (Jack Black) from destroying the Mushroom Kingdom. The cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Charlie Day as Luigi. I really hope this one is good. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 5th April.
Renfield
I have a feeling this could be awful but I’m keen to see Nicolas Cage‘s turn as Dracula in all its glory. This film tells the story of R.M. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), Dracula’s long-suffering servant, who falls in love with a traffic cop (played by Awkwafina) and wants to break free from his boss. My expectations are low but it could be fun. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 14th April.
Suzume
I have seen this anime already and I really liked it. It follows a 17-year-old girl named Suzume who travels across Japan with a mysterious young man, who has been turned into a chair, to stop a series of disasters from happening. It’s pretty weird but it’s an entertaining fantasy adventure with a moving finale. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 14th April.
Evil Dead Rise
The supernatural horror franchise is back, with Lee Cronin in the director’s chair this time around. The setting has been switched up and we’re not based in a cabin in the woods. This instalment is set in a small Los Angeles apartment where sisters Beth and Ellie find a strange book, which unleashes flesh-possessing demons. I watched 1981’s The Evil Dead for the first time recently and it was wild so I think I’m going to be very scared. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 21st April.
Ghosted
I really want this romantic comedy action adventure to be a winner. The film stars Ana de Armas and Chris Evans and was directed by Dexter Fletcher from a script by Deadpool’s Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (among others). Those names fill me with confidence so let’s hope it doesn’t disappoint! Evans plays Cole, who gets swept up in an international adventure to save the world when he starts dating secret agent Sadie (de Armas). Here’s my review. On Apple TV+ from 21st April.
Missing
I really enjoyed 2018’s Searching so I had high hopes for this standalone sequel. It was awesome and I can’t wait for you all to see it. The twists and turns kept me guessing the whole time and I did not see the ending coming at all. It’s so clever how the story is told purely through computer screens. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 21st April.
Peter Pan & Wendy
Yes, we have seen countless retellings of the Peter Pan story – but it’s a classic for a reason and I will be watching this latest one. As you probably all know, the story follows Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson) as she travels to Neverland with Pan (Alexander Molony) and encounters an evil pirate named Captain Hook (Jude Law). On Disney+ from 28th April.
Best of the rest: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Assasin Club, One Fine Morning, The Pope’s Exorcist and Operation Fortune: Rose de Guerre.
