Top films for February
Once again, a new month is upon us! So here’s my rundown of the films I’m excited about in February.
Knock at the Cabin
M. Night Shyamalan is back on form with his new thriller. It follows a young girl and her dads (played by Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge) whose holiday is interrupted by the arrival of a group (led by Dave Bautista) who demand they make a difficult choice to stop the apocalypse. My review is coming tomorrow. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 3rd February
Magic Mike’s Last Dance
Channing Tatum returns for his third and final outing as stripper Mike Lane. We don’t know much about the plot, but who cares, that’s all I need to know! I loved the 2012 original but 2015’s Magic Mike XXL wasn’t as good so I’m not sure what to expect from this one, which is set in London and features Salma Hayek. Let’s hope the franchise goes out with a bang! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 10th February
Women Talking
I was floored by this staggering, powerful movie when I saw it at LFF and it is finally coming out here. Sarah Polley‘s drama, which was seriously neglected at the Oscars, follows Mennonite women who have a meeting to discuss how to react to the horrific way they’re being treated by the men in their community. Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Ben Whishaw are all terrific. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 10th February
Blue Jean
This BAFTA-nominated drama is set in the 1980s and tells the moving story of a closeted lesbian PE teacher, played by Rosy McEwen. I spoke to writer/director Georgia Oakley about her movie at LFF and my interview goes live next week! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 10th February
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly are back as Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne in Marvel’s latest superhero outing. Most importantly, this marks the introduction of Jonathan Majors‘s Kang the Conqueror (a variant of He Who Remains from Loki) as the next big cross-movie villain and sets up the upcoming saga. Exciting! I do still have some Marvel fatigue but I will obviously watch this. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 17th February
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
This adorable stop-motion animated mockumentary tells the story of Marcel the Shell (voiced by Jenny Slate) and his quest to find long-lost members of his family. It’s quite a quirky movie and certainly won’t work for everybody but it’s been nominated for an Oscar so it must be good! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 17th February
Cocaine Bear
This does what it says on the tin – it’s about a bear who finds cocaine in the woods, consumes it all and goes nuts on nearby humans. It sounds ridiculous but the premise is actually based on a true story – the bear really did ingest cocaine! The rest is made up though. This looks like an absolute blast! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 24th February
The best of the rest – Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Whale, Saint Omer, EO, She Is Love, Somebody I Used to Know, Your Place or Mine, The Son, Sharper, What’s Love Got To Do With It?, Joyland, Broker and The Independent.
