Top films for January

Happy New Year, everyone! My first post of 2023 is the traditional preview of the films coming out in January. Read on for a rundown of the biggest and best films coming our way this month.

M3GAN

Everyone is seriously hyped about M3GAN. I have no idea if it will be any good but I’m excited to find out. The sci-fi horror, starring Allison Williams, follows a lifelike robotic doll called M3GAN who is designed to be a child’s greatest companion. However, she becomes a bit too overprotective of her human friend. It’s M3GANUARY! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 13th January.

TÁR

Cate Blanchett is coming for her third Oscar with her portrayal of fictional composer-conductor Lydia Tár. Lydia is on the precipice of one of the greatest achievements in her career when she is accused of something and her life spirals out of control. Todd Field‘s film is so utterly brilliant that many people mistakenly thought it was a biopic about a real person! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 13th January.

The Fabelmans

Steven Spielberg‘s semi-autobiographical drama is finally getting a release here (it’s taken long enough). Inspired by his own life, the coming-of-age film follows young aspiring filmmaker Sammy Fabelman as he leans into the power of movies after discovering a shattering family secret. Michelle Williams and Paul Dano play his parents. I cannot wait! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 27th January.

Babylon

I have loved Damien Chazelle‘s previous films – Whiplash, La La Land and First Man – so I can’t wait to see Babylon, even though it has already proven quite divisive. This three-hour spectacle of decadence and debauchery charts the rise and fall of multiple characters during Hollywood’s transition from silent film to talkies in the 1920s and stars Margot Robbie, Diego Calva and Brad Pitt. I’m so ready to form my own opinion about this movie! Here’s my review. In cinemas from 20th January.

Till

This is a hard-hitting, powerful film that everyone needs to watch. It tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley (Danielle Deadwyler) and the strong, courageous decisions she made after her 14-year-old son Emmett Till was lynched in 1955 for allegedly whistling at a white woman. Deadwyler’s performance is incredible. Keep an eye out for my review later this week. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 6th January.

All the Beauty and Bloodshed

I don’t often give a shout-out to documentaries in this list but I really should. If you saw Laura Poitras‘ 2014 doc Citizenfour, you’ll have some idea how good All the Beauty and Bloodshed will be. This film focuses on the photographer and activist Nan Goldin and her efforts to hold Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, accountable for America’s opioid crisis. I learned about Purdue and the Sackler family thanks to the 2021 series Dopesick and I’m keen to find out more. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 27th January.

What else is out this month?

Empire of Light, Shotgun Wedding, Unwelcome, Holy Spider, Alice, Darling and The Estate, among others.
