Something from Tiffany’s: Film Review
Looking for a festive romantic comedy that is cheesy and predictable but also super lovely? Look no further than Something from Tiffany’s.
The film begins in the iconic Tiffany’s jewellery store in New York City just before Christmas. Ethan (Kendrick Sampson) and his daughter Daisy (Leah Jeffries) are buying his girlfriend Vanessa (Shay Mitchell) an engagement ring, while Gary (Ray Nicholson) is picking out some earrings for his girlfriend Rachel (Zoey Deutch). A classic case of the old switcheroo happens and Gary and Ethan accidentally end up with the wrong blue boxes.
What did I say about predictable? You know how it’s going to end when Ethan and Rachel first meet. However, it’s still adorable watching that story unfold because you know they’re meant to be together. But there are hurdles along the way (of course) as Rachel ends up engaged to an unsuitable man and Ethan needs Gary to un-propose. They must sort the mix-up out before they can realise they’ve discovered who they’re supposed to be with.
The bag switch scene is far too obvious and it would have worked better if there was an element of surprise when the gifts were opened on Christmas Day. The writing isn’t the best and the whole conceit is very silly. Vanessa is a very flimsy character who is self-involved and clearly not right for Ethan, and Gary is a one-note loser who should have been kicked to the curb long ago – so neither of them was going to last.
I love Deutch and can watch her in anything so naturally, I was a big fan of Rachel and her amazing Italian bakery, plus her no-nonsense friendship with Terri (Jojo T. Gibbs). Sampson is attractive and his character is dreamy but a bit bland, so thankfully he is saved by his outspoken daughter.
Something from Tiffany’s is one of the cheesiest, most contrived, sentimental and predictable Christmas movies but it is also heartwarming and uplifting and I enjoyed it a lot! Christmas in New York, baby!
