October: The Woman King

Top films for October

It’s monthly preview time once again! October is a crazy busy month for film releases so I’ve been super selective this time and picked out the ones I’ve heard good things about and/or I am personally excited for.

The Woman King

This historical epic is absolutely fantastic and I cannot recommend it enough. I haven’t seen a film this good in a while. It’s a rip-roaring, crowd-pleasing all-rounder with terrific action setpieces and fully-rounded characters. Viola Davis is formidable as lead warrior Nanisca and she has strong support from Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim and Thuso Mbedu. Here’s my review. In cinemas on 4th October.

Halloween Ends

To be honest, I have a gut feeling that this is going to be rubbish but as the concluding chapter of the new Halloween trilogy, it has to be seen! Halloween Kills wasn’t great so I don’t hold high hopes but I’m down with seeing Jamie Lee Curtis kick more ass. Fingers crossed “evil (finally) dies tonight” – that Michael Myers has got to go! Here’s my review. In cinemas on 14th October.

The Banshees of Inisherin

Martin McDonagh never misses! I love his writing so I have very high expectations for this movie, which stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson. Set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, Padraic (Farrell) is devastated when his best pal Colm (Gleeson) suddenly ends their longtime friendship. The reviews out of Venice were glowing and Farrell won the best actor prize so I’m hyped! Here’s my review. In cinemas on 21st October.

Decision to Leave

If you’ve seen The Handmaiden, you’ll know that Park Chan-wook‘s next movie isn’t to be missed. The plot: A detective investigating a man’s death falls in love with the victim’s mysterious wife. I’ve heard fantastic reactions to this so my hopes are high. Here’s my review. In cinemas on 21st October.

October: The School for Good and Evil
The School for Good and Evil (Netflix)

The School for Good and Evil

Paul Feig‘s latest looks right up my street – witches, magic, fabulous outfits… Tick, tick, tick! The film tells the story of best friends Sophie and Agatha, who find themselves on opposite sides of a battle when they are sent to an enchanted school where heroes and villains are trained. The evil school is headed up by Charlize Theron while Kerry Washington leads the one for good. This looks very fun! Here’s my review. On Netflix from 19th October.

The Good Nurse

Eddie Redmayne plays against type as an evil nurse in this Netflix thriller. I’m so intrigued to see him portray real-life serial killer Charles Cullen considering he often plays sweet and wholesome characters. Cullen’s crimes are told through the eyes of his colleague Amy, played by Jessica Chastain. I love her so I’ll definitely be giving it a watch. Here’s my review. In cinemas 18th October and on Netflix from 26th October.

Bros

I have read so many rave reviews for this movie. It’s the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio with a predominantly LGBTQ+ cast – finally! It’s been a long time coming! It tells the story of two commitmentphobes who try to embark on a relationship. Leading man Billy Eichner co-wrote the script with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller. Please go and support this groundbreaking movie. Here’s my review. In cinemas from 28th October.

Barbarian

I recently said that Smile was the most effectively scary horror of the year so far and that could soon be overtaken by Barbarian, which I’ve seen so many tweets about. The film stars Georgina Campbell as a young woman who discovers the rental home she booked is already occupied by a stranger. And in horror logic, she decides to stay the night!! Rookie mistake. Here’s my review. In cinemas on 28th October.

Other releases: Black Adam, Amsterdam, The Lost King, Mr Harrigan’s Phone, Luckiest Girl Alive, Lyle Lyle Crocodile, My Policeman and Wendell & Wild.
