Only Murders in the Building S2: I’m reunited with my favourite trio
Only Murders in the Building returns to Disney+ today everybody! I was lucky enough to catch the first two episodes last week and here’s what I thought of them.
*SPOILER ALERT FOR SEASON ONE INCOMING*
The second season picks up literally where the first one left off – with Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) rushing into Mabel’s (Selena Gomez) apartment and finding her covered in blood over Bunny Folger’s (Jayne Houdyshell) dead body. The trio are obviously accused of her murder so they must figure out who actually killed Bunny to clear their names.
It felt so good to be reunited with this trio and to be back in the Arconia once again. They work so well together and bounce off each other brilliantly. Gomez is my favourite as the straight man to Martin and Short’s silliness and the generational differences between her and them are used to great comedic effect.
The writing is as witty and hilarious as ever. I have a feeling the story and murder mystery won’t be as tight as it was the first time around but I’m here for the trio and their jokes and hijinks more than anything else. And on those fronts, Only Murders delivers – I was totally entertained.
The show had a few guest stars last season and that trend continues, with the terrific Shirley MacLaine as Bunny’s mother Leonora and Amy Schumer as herself (replacing Sting as the Arconia’s celebrity) with her usual cringy and OTT brand of comedy. Cara Delevingne has joined the cast as the queer artist Alice and I’m not totally convinced about her performance yet but it’ll be interesting to see where her storyline goes.
I have high hopes for the rest of the season. Eight more episodes of hanging out at the Arconia solving the mystery of Bunny’s death? Yes, please!
