Oscars 2022: Which film should win Best Picture?

After what feels like the longest awards season ever, the Oscars finally take place on Sunday. There has been a lot of debate about which film deserves to take home the coveted Best Picture statuette so I’ve decided to weigh in.

Here’s the alphabetical list of all ten Best Picture nominees and my thoughts about them. Click the titles to read my reviews.

Belfast

I really liked this movie. I thought it was terrific, much funnier than I expected it to be (given the premise) and Jude Hill was such a delightful young lead. I wouldn’t be mad if this won Best Picture but it’s not top of my list.

CODA

I LOVED this film. I’ve seen so much hate towards it on Twitter since it became one of the frontrunners but it is the only film on this list that I gave five stars. I never expected it to be a Best Picture contender as it’s just a sweet, heartwarming, crowd-pleasing drama (that made me cry!) but it’s the one I like the most so it’s getting my vote.

Don’t Look Up

Adam McKay‘s apocalyptic satire has divided audiences but I was in the positive camp. I found it really funny and liked most of what it had to say. I don’t think it’s worthy of a Best Picture nomination though.

Drive My Car

I literally saw this one last night! It’s impressive that a three-hour Japanese movie has crossed over into the main categories. The film tells a beautiful story but didn’t need to be quite so long. This is probably going to win Best International Feature Film, a prize I would prefer The Worst Person in the World to win tbh.

Oscar Best Picture nominee Dune
Warner Bros.

Dune

Man, everybody raves about this movie and I thought it was just fine. It looks gorgeous and the scale of it is insane but I thought it went on way too long and I wasn’t invested in anybody. I’m happy with it winning categories like sound, score and cinematography but it’s not a Best Picture winner in my eyes.

King Richard

I really enjoyed the inspirational story of this sports biopic and the performances across the board – Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton – are fantastic but the film as a whole didn’t blow me away. So it doesn’t rank very highly for Best Picture.

Licorice Pizza

I do not get the hype for Licorice Pizza. There’s not much of a story – it’s all about the vibes! If this film was made by a newcomer and didn’t have the name Paul Thomas Anderson attached to it, it wouldn’t have this much acclaim. I liked Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman though.

Nightmare Alley

I liked the story but it was far too long and slow. It looks absolutely gorgeous and I want it to win Best Production Design, but I think it’ll be beaten by Dune. That’s a shame because the production design is stunning! Definitely not a Best Picture contender though.

The Power of the Dog

I’ve mentioned this before but I do not get the hype surrounding this film – and it’s one of the frontrunners!! How?! I found this film too subtle for its own good and quite dull in places. I don’t want it to win Best Picture but it’s on quite a winning streak this season so I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

West Side Story

Steven Spielberg deserves to win Best Director for this musical – the way it’s shot is incredible and the America sequence is so amazing that it brought tears to my eyes. I’m glad it won Best Casting at the BAFTAs as the newcomers – Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, Mike Faist and David Alvarez – are all fantastic. I have so many issues with the story though.

How I would rank the nominees: 1) CODA 2) Belfast 3) West Side Story 4) King Richard 5) Don’t Look Up 6) Dune 7) Drive My Car 8) Nightmare Alley 9) The Power of the Dog 10) Licorice Pizza.

Tomorrow I’ll be doing my traditional predictions post so stay tuned for that!
