And Just Like That…: What I liked about the revival show

I have heard/seen far more negative than positive reactions to And Just Like That… I get it, the show has had its issues, but instead of focusing on its downsides, I’m gonna praise it for the things it got right.

*SPOILER ALERT*

Carrie’s story

Sex and the City has always been the Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) show, and I really liked how her story started and concluded this season. Sure, it got off to a shaky start (I didn’t understand why the heck she was on that podcast!) and the story hasn’t been solid the entire 10 episodes but I enjoyed watching her journey. Seeing her go from grieving widow to putting herself back out there was lovely. This arc was originally designed for the third SATC film before it was scrapped and I’m glad because they were able to explore it in more depth as a show. The final few minutes in which she announced the name of her relationship podcast and had a cheeky kiss in the lift made me very happy.

The Samantha situation

Obviously, I would have loved Samantha Jones to have been in this but Kim Cattrall didn’t want to do it so what are you gonna do? I’m glad Samantha wasn’t killed off and they are still friends, albeit off-screen. I like that Carrie still texts her and it wasn’t used too often. I didn’t miss Samantha as much as I expected which was a surprise.

Seema Patel

As I wrote last week, Sarita Choudhury‘s powerhouse real estate broker Seema Patel is the best new character. She’s rich, fabulous and she makes sense as a new friend for Carrie. I love her and want to see more of her. Not all of the newcomers were a success but I also really liked Karen Pittman as Dr. Nya Wallace.

Anthony

God bless Mario Cantone for doing what he does best – being the bitchiest gay friend there is! He cracks me up. He has been dependably hilarious this season. I don’t know if he was originally supposed to be in it this much or if his role was increased after Willie Garson (Stanford) died, but he’s great value. I feel like there must have been a better way to write out Stanford but what can you do when your actor passes away midway through filming?

Charlotte when she’s in comedy mode

While some of the characters have changed since Sex and the City, Charlotte seems pretty much the same – for better or worse. I found her annoying and super cringe in the early episodes but Kristin Davis delivered some of the best comedy of trio. The tampon episode was fluffy and silly but very amusing and her being caught about to give Harry (Evan Handler) a blowjob was fun too.

You’ll notice that I haven’t mentioned Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) – but that’s because I’m focusing on the positives! Like Carrie, I think she’s making a huge mistake choosing Che (Sara Ramirez) over her internship and I also felt sorry for Steve (David Eigenberg). But I liked how she addressed that in the finale when she asked: “Am I not allowed to change? And then change back again if I feel like it?”

SJP and Michael Patrick King have both expressed their interest in making another season and I’m here for it. I have loved being back with these ladies and I’m ready to see where their lives go next.
